Docosahexaenoic.....whata whata???

Tonight I came to a very crazy and funny conclusion. I've read many articles and books about pregnancy and learned that something I needed in my diet was going to be hard to get. DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, is an omega-3 fatty acid that is a structural fat in the brain and retina of the eye as well as well as a key component of the heart. It is found in fish and pregnant women should limit their intake of fish because of the mercury levels. So, how might I get this important nutrient to my child, you might ask??? My doctor prescribed a prenatal vitamin for me called Tandem DHA. I really like my doctor and knew just from her prescription that she too had been doing her reading! I've never had any nausea from the prenatal vitamins like others described and considered myself lucky. Until I burped. Yes, you read that right. On Friday night I ate at a fish restaurant....but like a good momma, did not eat fish. Later that night I burped (stop reading now if that grosses you out) and I thought that I might also throw up in my mouth a little because I TOTALLY tasted dead fish. I don't even like good, cooked fish....so the taste of dead fish? Oh my! I didn't think too much of it that night except that I was totally grossed out and prayed that I wouldn't need to burp again. Well, tonight, right after taking my prenatal vitamin, same thing! I burped and totally tasted dead fish. Then it hit me...it is that vitamin! That darn DHA!

"Infants whose mothers supplement with DHA during pregnancy and nursing or who are fed formula milk supplemented with DHA and AA have significantly enhanced levels of these nutrients available to them. Major infant brain growth occurs during pregnancy and throughout the first two years of life." (http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-03/udg-ifm032608.php)

I know that this sounds crazy, but so be it.....

The Tandem DHA website does state that it is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersynsitivty to any of its ingrediets including fish and fish oil.

Ewww...bless your heart. So you have to taste dead fish until the baby gets here? I think I might risk my baby being stupid and switch vitamins...HA! JK!! You're one good Mama!!

Oh that is so bad! first the chicken feather now fish burps? I'm sad that you have gone through so much but I'm very entertained. Well, have you tried any of the other DHA prenatal vitamins? do they do the same thing to you? (I like the primacare one.)

Molly, so sorry to hear about the nasty burps I can only imagine. I'm taking Expecta by Lipa as my DHA supp. and haven't had any nasty burps. It's over the counter so you can get it at your local walgreens, walmart, or you can order it online which will save you a few dimes :). Glad to hear everything is well. We're truly enjoying your blogs keep us posted.
